Band concert free to public

Thomas County Central High School Bands are spreading holiday cheer with their upcoming Christmas concert.

Thomas County Central High School’s “Best of the Nest” Christmas Concert is 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, in the TCCHS gymnasium.

"The concert will feature all of our ensembles at TCCHS: symphonic band, concert band, jazz band, percussion ensembles, marching band, and dazzlers,” Assistant Band Director Paul Johns said. “We are playing many different arrangements of Christmas tunes, anything from the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus, to 'I'll Be Home for Christmas,' to 'What Child is This'."

Percussionist Jaiquez Duncan said his favorite tune on the list is "Here Drums Santa Claus."

"It's an all percussion feature and a new twist on an old classic," he said.

Senior Garret Smith is looking forward to performing this selection with the school’s jazz band.

"The jazz band is playing 'Hot Chocolate' from 'The Polar Express',” he said. “It's a song a lot of people know and enjoy."

The band directors said they are "ready and excited" for the upcoming concert. So are band members, though it will be “bittersweet” for some.

"These past seven years in band have been great,” senior Shelby Mitchell said. “I have made several close friends and I have learned several new things. This last Christmas concert is a bittersweet experience, but I am happy to have participated in the best band program."
