Two TCCHS students win state chorus slots

Two Yellow Jackets recently sang their way into the ranks of an annual prestigious state chorus.

Thomas County Central High School Chorale students Kylen Meares, a freshman, and sophomore Caleb Giddens have been selected as members of this year’s Georgia All State Chorus.

The competition was held at Bainbridge High School on Jan. 23, where they auditioned by showcasing their talents in musical knowledge and singing abilities.

“Kylen and Caleb did very well, both of which scored above 90 percent in their final audition,” TCCHS Chorale teacher Nicole Davis said.

To audition, the boys were required to learn six songs that were chosen for them by Dr. Gene Peterson, conductor of the All State Senior Men Chorus, and were graded based on how they performed.

Kylen Meares practiced in chorus class and at home to prepare for the audition.

“I felt confident in my submission, but also noticed my mistakes,” Meares said. “I was ecstatic to hear that I made it.”

The audition also allowed the students to learn about different cultures and different types of songs. Also, the event helped the students become better musicians.

Caleb Giddens said he’s “always loved singing” and he’d been to All State once before as an eighth-grader.

“It was a cultural experience for me,” Giddens said. “I got to learn a bit of different languages as well as the cultures that the songs came from.”

This year, Giddens said he tried his best and reminded himself that, even if he didn’t make it, he would be OK.

“I am just glad I get to sing,” he said.

Georgia All State Chorus will be held Feb. 25-27 in Athens.

“During the event, the students will get the chance to work alongside dedicated young musicians such as themselves and sing under the direction of world class conductors,” Davis said of the event. “It always proves to be a memorable and valuable experience for the singers.”
