Thomas County Central High School is wrapping up its project to box support for the nation’s troops.

TCCHS Key Club wanted to find ways to thank members of the military by meeting their everyday needs. Operation Shoebox is a way to do that, one that gets the TCCHS community involved in honoring the nation’s troops.

“Operation Shoebox is the perfect project for Key club because it is in the spirit of the club to give back however we can,” club secretary Hailey Bryan said. “Giving to our troops who are deployed is one of the highest honors for us.”

Operation Shoebox provides support for troops deployed, overseas, and returning home. It is their mission to meet the needs of every hero with pride and appreciation. According to the Operation Shoebox website, one million soldiers have received these shoeboxes, so far.

For weeks, TCCHS collected items. The boxes created by the students and staff will be sent overseas. They will then be handed out to the men and women there. These troops will be training in the jungle and on missions where personal hygiene items and entertainment are greatly appreciated. Small snacks for the troops in class are also appreciated.

“The support from TCCHS has been overwhelming,” TCCHS guidance counselor Tammy Shealey said. “I have already shipped two large boxes and we have more ready to go.”

TCCHS hopes to make a difference as much as it can. The school has been able to fill eight printer paper boxes of items to send to the troops.

“They are all very thankful, and love knowing they are thought about,” Shealey said.
