TCCHS to present fine arts students’ artistic talents

Thomas County Central High School is creating an unforgettable display of student talent.

On Thursday, Feb 1 the TCCHS Fine Arts Department is hosting an event known as Fine Arts Night. Programs involved are art, band, chorus, drama and dance. The purpose of this event is to highlight the school’s fine arts classes and to showcase students’ skills.

“We wanted to reach the entire school because typically our events are late in the evening and some cost a fee,” drama instructor Gabrielle McMullen said. “Since this event is free we are hoping to reach more people. This is also a first because the entire fine arts department is collaborating on an event which has not been done before.”

The theme, chosen by the fine arts teachers, is centered on storybooks and fables.

“Everyone has a story to tell whether through music, dance, or art,” art teacher Shelby Young said. “And what better way to start a fine arts night than to see everyone’s story?”

Chorus teacher Michelle Davis says all the facets of fine arts “use a different method, but all tell a story,” like art and its “shapes, colors and lines,” drama with “movement and vocal inflection,” and band with “harmonies and articulation.”

“Those attending should expect to see and hear pieces that they are familiar with and have stories told in a new light than they have seen before,” McMullen said.

Some students will perform with more than one group, like Tori Hall who is with art and chorus, Victoria Zabala with dance and art, and Kasey Bradley with drama and band.

“This show is a must see for everyone because it shows how hard everyone in the fine arts department works all year round,” Bradley says. “It might encourage future TCCHS students to participate….”

While some students and teachers are ready to tell everyone about what they’re doing, like drama’s rendition of the prologue from “Into the Woods,” other classes are keeping their performance specifics a surprise.

“We have prepared three songs,” Davis says. “I do not want to give the titles away, but it will be a great performance.”

TCCHS Bands program will feature several ensembles playing a variety of tunes relevant to the night’s motif such as television show themes like “The Addams Family.”

Also, the school’s dance program will be performing pieces that will be featured in its spring showcase, instructor Katie Gaston says. The songs include: “Jack's Suite” (from “Pirates of the Caribbean”), “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin” (from “Teen Beach Movie”), “Better When I'm Dancin’” by Meghan Trainor (from “The Peanuts Movie”), and music from “Sleeping Beauty Op. 66” by Tchaikovsky.

From the art program, a variety of students’ work, like clay totem poles, will be on display.

TCCHS Fine Arts Night is 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. It will be hosted in the school’s cafeteria. Admission is free.

“This show is a must see for anybody [who] enjoys [the] arts and enjoys attending theatre shows,” drama student Patricia Godwin says.
