STEM Challenges

Zulu students recently participated in a series of challenges. During Language Arts, they had to complete challenges related to the works of Edgar Allen Poe. In Spanish, they had to complete a song lyric translation challenge. In Math, they solved a number of math riddles and Real-World Math problems. In Science, they had to build a straw tower that held a tennis ball a minimum height for one minute. As students completed one room's challenge, they moved to the next, earning points towards the prize of a waffle breakfast cooked and provided by the teachers.

In addition to the Classroom Challenges, students also participated in STEM activities to build problem-solving skills. They used trash bags to explore how the design of a parachute can affect the amount of mass it can safely land in a target area, Styrofoam plates and straws to build a balloon-powered car that would travel a certain distance, and completed a NASA designed "Moon Lander" activity using a zip line to carry and drop a marble on target similar to the way the Lunar Landing Vehicles worked. Students found the challenges to be "really frustrating but fun."
