Students on the 8th grade MERIT Zulu team at Thomas County Middle School recently visited Kolomoki Mounds State Park in Blakey, Georgia. The site is the oldest and largest Woodland Indian site in the Southeastern United States. The students are studying the prehistoric cultures of Georgia, as well as early European contact with the natives in the region. Students climbed 57 feet to the top of Georgia’s oldest temple mound, visited the museum, and toured the inside of an excavated mound. Rangers shared information about the history of the site, and demonstrated tools and weapons used by the Woodland Indians.
