Zulu Company Enjoys Field Trips
The 8th grade MERIT team, Zulu Company, at Thomas County Middle School attended the annual “School Days” event with the Lower Muskogee Creek tribe in Whigham, GA on Thursday, October 17th.  The students learned about the history and culture of the Muskogee Creek people.  From storytelling to the art of hunting to Native dancing, fun was had by all!

The eighth grade MERIT team from Thomas County Middle School also recently took a tour of the Farley Nuclear Power Plant near Dothan, Alabama.  Students learned how electricity is generated using nuclear power.  They also learned about the safety and security measures at the plant.  Students were introduced to careers in the industry and given time to explore educational exhibits set up in the visitor’s center. Students were also shown around the simulated control room that employees use during training sessions. Many students came away with a more positive attitude about nuclear energy. “Before this trip I was extremely skeptical of the use of nuclear power, but after this trip I feel safer and more supportive of nuclear energy,” said Sierra Stephens, a Zulu Company student after the trip.

The bus tour around the plant held at least one shock for the students. “What surprised me most about Plant Farley is that a certain amount of acres is for the plant itself and the rest is for a wildlife reserve,” stated Courtney Powell, another student.

“The trip was very worth it because of all the exhibits and I learned a lot,” concluded Cara Eaton.
