TCMS and TCUE Places Emphasis On Reading
Students will be exposed to novels and biographies in classes other than English and language arts.

Instructional programs include:

• A balanced literacy framework in grades K-2

• A vocabulary program in grades 5-8

• A literature-based reading program in grades 5-12

Under the direction of Melanie Chavaux, assistant superintendent for instruction, the school district has begun implementing and embedding a balanced literacy framework in grades K-2.

The new framework will consist of a 2 1/2-hour block of time during the school day that provides small group direct instruction in phonics for all students, with an emphasis on fluency, rhythm and intonation.

“During this block of time, the teacher also teaches students about the joys of reading and teaches them how to think about and discuss text,” Chavaux explained.

Superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay said the school system has enjoyed a strong reading program for years.“This new framework will provide consistency among all of our Thomas County elementary schools and will ensure that all students are able to achieve their full potential and receive the appropriate support when needed,”
