The most wonderful day of the year is currently in the works at Thomas County Central High School.

Shop with a Yellow Jacket, also known as SWAYJ, is being prepared for community kids this Christmas.

“Students and teachers come together to help the less fortunate,” Renae Moore, TCCHS teacher and a SWAYJ coordinator, said. “It’s a time where we come together and show what it means to be a true Yellow Jacket.”

The children come from Hand-In-Hand, Garrison Pilcher and Cross Creek schools. One child is placed with one team, and the team and child shop at Walmart. After shopping, the kids and teams come back to the school and wrap the gifts.

“To interact with these kids during that time of year is definitely something that I always look forward to,” TCCHS student and past participant Logan Beever said. “It’s a good way to represent what Christmas is all about.”

Students from TCCHS form teams of up to five people and raise a minimum of $100 to help children and their families have a special Christmas. Therefore, a five person team would mean $20 per person.

“I mow yards for a few people, and that helped me raise the little bit of money I needed for SWAYJ,” TCCHS student and past participant Ben Barwick said. “Something like this is more special than spending money on anything else.”

Persons who do not wish to be on a team can still donate money to the event.
