Petitioning for a High School Diploma

Pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-281.1

An individual (hereinafter referred to as “Student”) who is no longer enrolled in a Georgia public school and who previously failed to receive a high school diploma in this state or was denied graduation solely for failing to achieve a passing score on one or more portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests or its predecessor or the Georgia High School Writing Test or its predecessor may petition the local board of education in which he or she was last enrolled to determine the Student’s eligibility to receive a high school diploma pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-281.1  based on the graduation requirements in effect when the Student first entered ninth grade.

The Student may complete a petition form at the Thomas County Board of Education Student Enrollment Office or obtain the form from below. All petition forms are to be returned to:

Thomas County Board of Education

Student Enrollment Office

200 North Pinetree Boulevard

Thomasville, GA 31792

The completed Petition Form may also be faxed to the Board of Education at 229-225-4376 or emailed to the enrollment office at enrollment@tcjackets.net. If submitting a petition by mail, fax, or email, please include a scanned/copied image of your government issued photo identification. Incomplete information may delay processing. To follow-up on a petition status, please call the Board of Education at 229-225-4380.

Once a former student petitions the board for a diploma and the appropriate school officials determine that the sole reason that the student did not receive a high school diploma was due to not passing any part of a graduation test, the student’s name shall be placed on the consent agenda for an upcoming board of education meeting at which time the student shall be approved as a high school graduate.

The school district will cover all costs associated with awarding diplomas to graduates including retrieval costs for stored records and diploma printing costs.

Students who have already petitioned the school board for a high school diploma and whose eligibility status for a diploma has already been established by the appropriate school officials and whose names are attached to this resolution are hereby declared graduates of the Thomas County School System.
