Freshmen study Greek Mythology

Thomas County Central High School freshmen literature students are studying Greek Mythology and learning how those stories are still relevant in today’s world.

The unit will cover many of the classics like “The Odyssey” and “Edith Hamilton’s Mythology.” Students also are responsible for special projects, for example a visual project about Odysseus’s journey in “The Odyssey.”

“I like mythology because it is like a whole different world of someone’s dreams,” student Que Addison said. “It is different and interesting.”

Freshman Collin Keigans has enjoyed learning about “the Greeks’ idea of creation.”

The unit is a collaboration between the TCCHS literature department and the school’s history department.

Students seem to connect with many characters in mythology, according to literature teacher Laura Parkerson.

“There is so much today that stems back to mythology,” she said.

Her favorite thing about teaching mythology is “watching the kids connect real life experiences to books and movies that they are currently reading.”

History teacher Brett James thought the unit “a great way to tie in content from another subject area.”

“It just happened that we were learning about classical Greece when they were covering mythology in their language arts classes,” he said. “We did one activity where we had a map of Odysseus’ travels according to ‘The Odyssey’. We also studied a bit more in depth about who Homer was and the controversy surrounding his existence- or lack thereof.”
