General Guidelines

1. Service hours must be turned in 10 days after the end of each grading period. Seniors are to turn in all their hours by the last Thursday in March to be considered for Senior Honors.

2. Service hours should be approved by the supervisor at the agency. Family members and students may not sign off as a supervisor.

3. Activities for which students are personally compensated or which are required as a form of restitution cannot be counted toward service hours. Compensation includes all forms of payment (money, discounts, items, grades, privileges, etc.)

4. Students will not receive service hours for camps, classes, or any activities that charge a fee or tuition.

5. Activities can be counted that involves studying and/or advocating for important community needs, as long as such studying leads to formal recommendations for action and the student remains involved.

6. School activities can meet service requirements if they benefit or promote the general welfare of the entire school, but not for activities that benefit only their club.

7. Service hours will NOT be awarded for activities involving a for-profit organization. Exception - students can receive credit for participating in service opportunities at assisted living facilities or nursing homes if the service is provided to resident patients.

8. Activities through any organization, such as a church or a student club, which are solely for its members, will not be approved. Religious and faith-based hours can be approved as long as the work is not in conjunction with any worship service or religious activity.

9. Time spent formally organizing and planning a service activity or participating in training can be counted as long as the hours can be quantified and verified. Such planning must be a part of active involvement.

10. Hours that are "bundled" (covering several days/events) will not be accepted. Students who complete more than one day of service with the same organization are required to submit a Daily Log, which is also located on this website.

11. No more than 8 hours of service for any given day will be approved.

12. No more than 25 hours completed during the summer will be excepted.

13. All service hours must be submitted online by using the Google form that is located at the Service Learning quick link at the TCCHS website. All submissions must also use the Service Documentation Form, also located at the Service-Learning website. The form, signed by the appropriate supervisor, must be then be copied/scanned and uploaded to the Google Form.

14. For hours to be accepted, students must clearly articulate exactly what they did during their service and also explain what "need" they met. This is especially true for service learning hours to be awarded.

15. Supervisor signatures do not guarantee service hours. Once hours are submitted online, the Serivce Learning Coordinator or the Merit Coordinator, will review the submission and then determine the number of hours accepted. So, it is most important that students periodically verify with the Service Learning Coordinator as to their current approved hours.
