TCCHS accepts new American flag

Thomas County Central High School has received a new American flag.

A representative for Modern Woodmen of America visited TCCHS Wednesday to deliver the flag. The school has a flag pole on the front lawn of the campus and daily flies an American flag. The flag presented was a replacement for the one previously flown and donated by the organization.

“It’s important for us to keep the flags in good condition, especially for all the men and women who have fought and died for the flag,” Elliott Kirby, financial rep for Modern Woodmen of America.

Several students who have demonstrated “outstanding citizenship,” according to Principal Trista Jones, were selected to take part in the ceremony.

“I enjoyed helping out as much as I could,” senior Tanner King, 17, said of helping to take off the school’s old flag and hang the new one. “It (the American flag) represents freedom. It represents the United States.”

King also said members of his family have served in the U.S. Army, so being part of the flag ceremony was “an honor.”

Jones said it is important for TCCHS to have an American flag and fly it every day because students can see it as a symbol of freedom and their country.
