3 athletes earn Dale Earnhardt Jr. scholarships

Three Thomas County Central High School 2016 graduates have been honored for their skills both in the academic classroom and on the sports field.

Recently, Conley Wilhelm, Mason Lawing and Abby Hurst have been named Dale Earnhardt Jr. High School Scholar Athlete of the Week winners. Bobby Latmore, of 97.9 ESPN Radio Tallahassee, presented the awards, $1,000 each, to the recipients at TCCHS Thursday.

“It’s an honor to be recognized,” Abby Hurst said. “Hearing my family, friends and co-workers say they were voting for me was truly a blessing! I believe that being a part of a close-knit community is what helped me win. I’ll forever be grateful for the votes. Thank you to everyone who has supported me in my soccer career to help me achieve this award!”

The scholarship competition began in January and runs through June. Finalists, nominated by local athletic directors and coaches, are chosen by 97.9 ESPN Radio and WCTV. Each round, finalists are presented for public vote and the athlete with the most votes wins a scholarship provided by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Buick, GMC, Cadillac of Tallahassee.

Hurst, who has a 3.7 GPA, played soccer senior year. She will attend Georgia College & State University and pursue an early childhood education degree. She plans to put her money toward housing or textbooks.

Wilhelm, who has a 3.5 GPA, ran track and played football, cross country, wrestling, and soccer his senior year. He’s “very excited” to receive the award. He will attend Piedmont College and major in early childhood education.
