TCCHS holds student council elections

A new group of student leaders has answered the call to serve their peers and is ready to take the reins for a new school year.

Thomas County Central High School recently held elections for its 2018-2019 student council officers. Elections were for the rising sophomore, junior and senior classes.

“Student council elections are held in the spring for the upcoming school year so that class officers are available in the summer to make plans and prepare for the new school year,” advisor Teresa Carver said. “Students are excited as they think about their upcoming sophomore, junior and especially senior year.”

Offices of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, inspirational leader and parliamentarian were decided for each grade. Students who wish to serve but are not elected may act as senators for their grade.

Emily Owens was elected senior class secretary.

“I wanted to help improve our school and make it a better environment for my fellow students,” she said. “I chose secretary because I’m good at listening, taking notes and remembering ideas.”

Leila Hurst is holding student council office for the first time. She will be the senior class inspirational leader.

“I wanted to run because I wanted to be more involved with school activities,” Hurst says. “I thought being the inspirational leader would allow me to make a positive impact on my peers and senior classmates.”

Owens believes student councils are important additions to schools.

“Students need to have a voice regarding school decisions,” she said.

Student councils allow youth to have some say in planning events like pep rallies and prom, Hurst adds.

“It is good to allow them to make decisions based on what the students want to make school more enjoyable,” she said.

Hurst looks forward to working with other council members to plan such events.

“…Right now, I am just excited to get started,” she said.

The election for incoming ninth grade officers will be held at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, Carver said.
