TCCHS inducts more than 100 into National Honor Society

Each year, National Honor Society chapters across the nation and around the world strive to recognize high school students’ exemplary achievements.

Thomas County Central High School Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Thomas County Board of Education Auditorium. More than 100 TCCHS students earned induction status this year.

“We're so proud of all our new members for meeting the organization’s high expectations,” sponsor Brett James said.

Junior and senior students with an A average in their academic classes and no major disciplinary issues may receive an invitation to join the TCCHS NHS chapter. But getting inducted is just the start of members’ NHS experience.

“Meeting the qualifications is only the beginning as members are required to complete [50] community service hours and maintain an A average,” James said. “Our members will go on to be leaders in college and their community long after they have graduated from Central."

The event featured brief words about the organization’s four principles – character, scholarship, leadership and service – from current members, certificate awarding to inductees and recitation of the NHS pledge.

Junior Jordyn Tillman, 17, said becoming an NHS member means she’s now part of an organization that promotes leadership, service, character and scholarship.

“It means a lot to me because it shows a commitment to my academic success and my dedication to service and character that will help me succeed in high school and the future,” Tillman said.

Junior Brady Whatley, 16, said this significant accomplishment validates his hard work. Also, it’s an honor he’s sought for some time.

“I have known about and wanted to be in the club for years, especially after being added to the National Junior Honor Society back in eighth grade,” Whatley said. “Finally being an official member of NHS is a huge relief to me and something I am very grateful for.”
