Sam Holland will be the new athletic director at Thomas County Central, the school announced Wednesday. He’ll work with current athletic director Mike Singletary, who announced his resignation in December, until the end of the school year when Singletary’s contract runs out.

“I’ve been athletic director before and when the opportunity came up I was extremely excited to do it again,” Holland said during a phone interview Wednesday.

The coach has been with the school for seven years as the golf coach and the offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the football team. He’s previously coached football, golf, weightlifting, track and softball throughout 23 years at schools in Florida (Chiefland High School) and Alabama (Daleville High School).

“We thought his previous experience coaching a variety of sports would be very beneficial to our program,” superintendent Dr. Dusty Kornegay said during a phone interview. “He can identify with coaches of all sports.”

There are no immediate facilities projects Holland will be taking over. Along with day-to-day athletic director tasks, he’ll be helping Singletary with filling current coaching vacancies.

“I’m excited to continue in the excellence that’s already been laid out by coach Singletary,” Holland said. “[That excellence] is to be a part of all that goes on everyday; To continue in the excellence that’s already there. The pride that young men and women have to put on the jersey and compete in this state. When you mention Thomas County Central everywhere in this state it’s in reference to quality.”

Singletary is leaving after seven years as the athletic director, during which “he has been an advocate for all aspects of the athletic program and has been instrumental in numerous improvements to the athletic facilities system,” according to the Central press release. Holland was hired from within as a restructuring of the athletic department. He’ll continue teaching physical education at the school, but Kornegay said he will not be continuing current coaching responsibilities.

“Sam Holland has been a valued teacher and coach at Thomas County Central High School for seven years,” Central principal Trista Jones said in the press release. “We feel that his experience combined with his commitment to our school and our students will ensure that all of our athletic programs will continue the tradition of winning and sportsmanship that Yellow Jacket fans have come to expect.”
