Classroom Cow

Each year Mrs. Webb typically has a class pet to encourage collaboration of the students and to expose them to the needs of living things. Since Covid has been such a major issue, that has restricted hands on collaboration so by adopting the calf, we are still able to learn about what living things need. In addition, the process encourages growth and responsibility as we track the health and well being of the calf through the host dairy farm. Throughout the experience, we receive updates on how our calf is growing. In fact, April or May we will have the opportunity to video chat with our calf. This is of course a part of our Science standard related to the needs of living things as well as our Social Studies standard related to producers and consumers. In the process, we will discuss how the dairy cow is a producer of milk and how we as consumers benefit from that. The students have fun with it and it's a great way to teach them in the process!
