At the regular April meeting, the Thomas County Board of Education accepted Charles Evans' resignation as the District 3 Board representative. According to Evans, his resignation is due to health reasons that have made it difficult to continue in his role.
For his more than 14 years of service as a board member to the children of Thomas County, Evans was honored during the meeting with a certificate of appreciation and a personalized clock showing his years of service and support to the school system.
“Serving on the board has been one of the greatest experiences in my life,” Evans said. “It has been such a part of my life that I will miss tremendously."
Superintendent Dr. Lisa Williams said, “The school system is very appreciative of Mr. Evans for his more than 14 years of faithful, dedicated service as a board member to the children of Thomas County. We greatly appreciate all the many ways that he has helped support our students and system. He has served District 3 and the Thomas County community well and even though his time as a board member has ended, he will forever be a member of our Yellow Jacket family.”
The Board also approved the appointment of Ken Harper to fill the vacant District 3 board seat for the remainder of the current term.
Harper retired from the Thomas County School System as principal of Thomas County Central High School in 2014. He started as a history teacher and football coach in 1984 and served as an assistant principal before becoming principal in 2011.
“We are very thankful for Mr. Harper's willingness to serve on the board,” Dr. Williams said. “Before his retirement, Mr. Harper dedicated many years of his life to our school system as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal, and we have the utmost confidence that he will be just as dedicated serving in his new role as a Thomas County School System board member. Along with the other members of the Board, I am looking forward to working with Mr. Harper to keep our system moving in the right direction.”
Harper completed both his Masters and Specialist degrees from Valdosta State University in Educational Leadership.
“It is a privilege and honor to be asked to serve on this school board with such a great group of leaders,” Harper said. “With my 30 years of experience with the Thomas County School System, I know firsthand of its dedication to education and students’ success.”
Harper appreciates Evans’ service to the board and looks forward to continuing in his role.
Harper added, “Mr. Evans has served this board well, and I know these are big shoes to fill in his retirement. Thank you, Mr. Evans, for your service to the all of the schools in Thomas County and your support of me through all these years.”
