School Reopening Changes - Pre-planning starts on Aug. 17 - Students start on Sept. 8
Dear Thomas County Schools Families,
After many recent discussions with the local and regional health departments regarding Thomas County's current COVID-19 data, along with Archbold's announcements of rising COVID-19 case numbers, and the Governor's announced recommendation for systems to reopen after Labor Day, the start date for pre-planning has been moved to August 17 with students scheduled to return on September 8. The changes in dates will cause some changes to our 20-21 school calendar, which will be shared once it has been revised.
The postponement of school reopening will allow further development of our remote learning plans, computing device deployment for our digital learners, teacher preparation, continued discussions with health and local officials, and to ensure that our families and employees are fully prepared to start school in a successful manner.
We realize that the delay may not be the ideal solution for everyone, but please know that we did not make this decision lightly. The health and wellbeing of all of our students, staff, and families are vitally important to us. We are all eager to get back to traditional learning in our schools because that is where the majority of our students and staff thrive.
Our remote classroom and virtual school options will continue to be available for families who are not ready to have their child return to traditional learning.
Open house dates will be communicated to families through their child's school.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work to provide the safest learning environment for our students and staff.
Please continue to monitor our district website and social media pages for system updates.
- Our Georgia’s Path to Recovery for K-12 Schools restart guide has been updated to reflect the recently reissued Return to School guidance from DPH. Specifically, the district decision tree has been updated and recommendations from the K-12 restart working groups have been embedded. See attached updated documents.
- We are releasing restart guidance for Special Education/IDEA. Though the federal requirements of IDEA have not been waived, we have provided targeted guidance and scenarios applicable to realities being faced by school leaders, educators, families, and students with disabilities during a pandemic. See attached guidance.
- DPH is finalizing an online reporting tool for districts leaders to utilize when reporting confirmed cases of COVID-19 within their schools. Additional information and guidance from DPH is forthcoming.
