Seventh grade students are supported in pushing their skills to a new level as they develop an awareness of personal strengths. The elements of art and principles of design are used to create unified compositions. Both linear and atmospheric perspective are introduced, along with value studies.
Projects focus on landscape drawing, painting, and mixed media coupled with a study of master artists who have worked in this format. The first class challenges students to create a "Tree of Life", creating an abstract landscape. Following this project, students sketch outside in different locations, as weather permits with leads to a one-point perspective lesson. Compositions throughout the year are done in pen and ink, scratch board, oil pastel, colored pencil, and tempera or acrylic paint. Artists studied are Jacob Lawerence, Van Gogh, Constable, Turner, Cezanne, Monet, O’Keefe, and Eastern Indian Art. Students complete a portfolio of pieces which are exhibited on the TCMS hallways and media center and at the system's board offices.
