Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to introduce British literature, continue the development of writing skills, increase vocabulary, (including literary terms) and further improve grammar skills. The students will read and analyze a variety of British literature. Students will also complete a variety of functional writing assignments. This course is a requirement for graduation.

  • First Nine Weeks: Various supplemental texts

  • Second Nine Weeks:  A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare

  • Third Nine Weeks: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

  • Fourth Nine Weeks: 1984 by George Orwell 

 

Students may purchase their own personal copy of the above titles, or there will be one available for check out.

Reading 

 

Students will read a variety of texts, including long novels, short passages and informational texts.  Using these pieces, students will identify theme/central idea and other elements of literature, and will analyze development and structure.

 

Writing 

 

Students will clearly and coherently write:

  • Arguments to support claims using valid reasoning and evidence

  • Informative/Explanatory texts to examine complex ideas

  • Narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events

  • Short as well as more sustained research projects

 

Language

 

Students will demonstrate a command of Standard English, knowledge of language, and acquisition and use of vocabulary when writing. IXL

 

Speaking and Listening

 

Students will:

  • Initiate and participate in collaborative discussions

  • Evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media

  • Present information, findings, and evidence using a variety of media in order to convey a clear and distinct perspective while demonstrating a command of formal English

 

Vocabulary

 

Students will train using the Membean vocabulary program. Guidelines and requirements will be given in class.

Grading

Test (Unit Tests, Final Drafts, Research Papers, Major Projects) 35% 

Quiz (Quizzes, Minor Writings)         25%

Daily/Homework 20% 

Benchmarks 20%  

 

Students are responsible for making up assignments when they are absent. Please refer to the student handbook for policies regarding make-up work.  Students will receive a score of zero for assignments that are not completed. 

 

Expectations for Class
 

STUDENTS MUST BRING CHARGED CHROMEBOOKS TO CLASS DAILY. THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT DOING SO.

 

Classroom rules

  1. Be in your assigned seat beginning to work when the tardy bell rings

  2. Respect your classmates and teachers

  3. No cell phones unless specific permission has been granted

  4. No food and any drink must have a top (no cans)

 

Disruptive behavior: 

If you choose to disrupt class, I will follow one of the following avenues to remedy the situation:

  • verbal warning/student conference

  • parent/guardian phone call

  • call home and detention

  • referral to office

Severe disruption = immediate referral


 

****This year is different for all of us, so we will need to extend to each other grace and understanding. One of the biggest lessons that we strive to convey as teachers is that, while much of what happens to us in life we may not be able to control, but we can control how we respond to it. We are going to do the best we can with our learning environments, and we look forward to getting to know each of you over the course of the school year.
