Describing

Using and understanding descriptions of objects is an important part of building vocabulary.

Take turns with your child describing objects or pictured objects around the house, outside, or in a book.  Give 3-4 clues about the object. Consider using the following characteristics:

  1.  What it looks like-size, shape, color

  2. Where you would find it.

  3. What you use it for

  4. What it is made of

  5. What goes with it

  6. What does is smell, taste, or feel like

  7. Category

  8. Parts

For example if describing a banana:

  1.  It’s yellow-(color)

  2. It’s long and skinny (size and shape)

  3. You eat it (what you do with it)

  4. It’s a type of fruit (category)

  5. It has a peel (parts)

  6. You would buy it at the grocery store or find it in the kitchen(where)

  7. It’s soft and sweet (feels and tastes like)
