On December 12-14, 2019, ten Thomas County Middle School students attended the University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival (Midfest) in Athens, GA. During their stay, these students rehearsed and performed with one of eight bands led by nationally recognized clinicians from around the country.

In addition to being selected to participate, each student auditioned for chair placement in each band. Of those who auditioned, Tyler Laidman was selected to be a member of the prestigious Midfest Honor Band conducted by UGA Associate Director of Bands, Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger. Tyler represented one of the top four overall trombonists from Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee participating in the event. Tuba player, Ethan Mainprize, was selected as first chair in the band conducted by Luther Harris.
