Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21

Solar eclipse
The Thomas County School System strives to find unique opportunities to make learning interesting and relevant for its students.

We are making plans to utilize the solar eclipse that will occur on Monday, August 21st as a unique teaching and learning opportunity.

The solar eclipse will reach its peak around 2:35 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

To allow students to fully appreciate the event, the school day will be extended on Monday by 30 minutes.  All dismissals and all bus loads will be pushed back approximately 30 minutes on Monday, August 21st only.

Weather permitting, students will go outside to view the eclipse.  Each student will be provided safety glasses to use when viewing the eclipse.

Because most students will be dismissed to go outside around 2:00, any student who needs to be signed out before the end of the extended day on Monday, August 21st should be signed out by 1:45 p.m.  Once students go outside, calling them to the office to sign out will be difficult.

Once again, any student who needs to be signed out early on Monday, August 21st should be signed out by 1:45 p.m.
