Eighth grade MERIT students at Thomas County Middle School recently participated in the Stock Market Game, an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students grades 4-12 in the world of economics, investing and personal finance.  This also helps prepare students for financially independent futures.

Students begin with $100,000 in virtual cash and invest using real-time stock prices.  Six teams participated in the fall 10-week session.  The team of Walker Cobb, Charlie Emmett, Skipper Lippert, and Dylan Thompson placed first in the region, with an ending portfolio of over $107,000.

Club sponsor, Charla Floyd, TCMS 8th grade MERIT Georgia Studies teacher, praised the boys for their performance.  “With the unstable financial situation we have been living through and the wildly changing markets, it’s great that these boys were able to make stock choices that actually earned them a profit! They invested in several stocks including Tesla, and a hometown favorite, Flowers.”  The game will run another 10-week session beginning in February.  Students in 8th grade MERIT may participate in teams of 2-4.  Students should see Mrs. Floyd to sign up.
