Zulu Field Trip to Plant Farley

Students in Mr. Woodfin's eighth-grade MERIT science classes at TCMS recently visited Plant Farley, a nuclear power plant that is part of Southern Energy, located in Columbia, Alabama.

The field trip was part of a unit of study on energy transformations and transfers in a system. Students learned about the way the power plant takes nuclear energy and converts it into electricity. This unit also includes discussion of nuclear fission, radiation, and the ongoing debate about nuclear energy in the US.

After a presentation by Energy Education Center staff, students completed a scavenger hunt while touring the exhibits on display. Scavenger hunt winners were Kimber Lane and Damon Silvia.
