History Comes Alive at TCUE/TCMS

Thomas County Schools and The Thomasville Historical Society are partnering to ensure that all students have a deeper understanding of historical texts.  Students in grades 6th – 12th are being exposed to primary and secondary sources in a variety of ways.  Thomas County Middle School students are able to learn about the variety of research sources they can use to analyze a historical topic.  Eighth grade students are able to tour the museum as a part of their social studies standards.  Thomas County Central High students are taking their social studies standards to a higher level as they are able to research specific topics and apply that knowledge.  The partnership between the two groups has benefited students of all ages while giving them access to local historians.

Last week, groups from the Thomas County Upper Elementary sixth grade MERIT traveled to the Thomas County Public Library and the Thomasville Historical Society.  Students in the sixth grade MERIT program are introduced to the academic competition National History Day.  While researching their topics based on Leadership and Legacy, students were able to learn about resources provided by the Thomas County Public Library System. The children’s department was extremely helpful while helping students locate secondary sources on their topics.   After a picnic lunch at the Big Oak, students went to the Thomasville Historical Society.  Three groups rotated around the museum learning more about telling stories through primary sources, set-up of exhibits, and were able to go bowling as a fun reward for their hard work.
