TCCHS students attend the District Honor Band event in Norman Park

A group of young musicians from Thomas County Central High School recently were awarded an honor to showcase their exceptional talents.

The District Honor Band event was held Thursday-Saturday, Feb.  18- 20 in Norman Park. Musicians from TCCHS were selected from earlier auditions to perform in both bands: one for freshmen and sophomores, the other for juniors and seniors.

“The weekend was fantastic,” ninth-grader Michaela Gandy said. “It was a great experience.”

In order to get to make DHB, students had to practice hard and audition. Students had to learn an etude and sight read a short piece.

“I had to have lots of practice, hard work and determination,” 10th-grader Michael Moody said.

During the weekend these participants learned that it takes focus and a lot of hard work to be successful.

“I learned new rhythms that I have never seen before,” Gandy said. “District made me a better flute player.”

Also, students had a chance to watch the District Jazz Band performance, as well as a concert by the Albany State University Symphonic Band.  Other than that, the majority of the time students practiced music for their district performance, when friends and family were allowed to come see the show.

“My favorite part of the weekend was meeting new people and getting the opportunity to play with wonderful musicians,” Gandy said.

If there are any students who are considering trying out for DHB next year, these participants say go for it!

Moody advised young musicians that they can never practice too much and should put in all their effort in each day.

Gandy agrees.

“My advice to those that want to go to district in the future is practice, practice, practice,” she said. “Have confidence and believe in yourself. You can do it!”
