Thomas County Central High School Cross Country team is making strides to be the best in its field.

Last year, the team placed second in region. Member Parker Dixon said the placement “was a really good feeling.”

“I enjoyed sharing the experience with my team, as we ran as best as we could,” he said.

The new season is currently under way and runs into November. The team’s goal is to place first in region this year.

The team practices every day after school for more than an hour. Members work hard to gain speed and endurance.

“During practice we run our cross country course and complete intervals,” Luke Joiner said. “This helps me gain the speed I need to accomplish my goal of being the best I can be.”

The team’s hard work and time put toward running has allowed its members to grow a strong bond. Members of the team support each other during practices and meets.

“This sport has become a strong part of my life,” Cara Eaton said. “It calms me down and it just makes me feel like I can do anything.”

Members hope to motivate the student body to cheer them on as they work to achieve their goal.

“I encourage the team members to tell friends about our meets,” Coach Tom Rinehart explains. “If we spread the word to many people, some may come.”

The team has meets every Saturday morning. Each meet begins at 8 a.m. Upcoming meets includes: Oct. 22 at Thomasville and Nov. 5 at Carrollton.
