Course Description: Strategies is designed to address the diverse learning needs and modifications of students.  Reading, writing, and vocabulary are emphasized daily for all students.  Individual learning needs will be supported, as well as transition services, career education, social skills, and math (see more about course descriptions below).

Course Policies: Courses will adhere to all student IEP, Thomas County Central, Thomas County Schools, and Georgia state policies. Individual class rules will be discussed per teacher/class.

Required Materials: Students are responsible a positive attitude.  Texts, Binders, composition notebook, pencils and paper will be provided.

Grading:  Grades for all subjects will be calculated on the individual student’s abilities and participation.  Eighty percent of the student’s nine week grade will be determined by completion of class work provided daily.  The remaining twenty percent of the student’s grade will be determined by their class behavior.

Grading Scale:      A =100-90       B =89-80       C =79-70       F =69 and below

 

Course Descriptions:

English: Students will read short stories, novels and poetry pertaining to state standards in American and World Literature.  Students will produce writing that establishes an appropriate organizational structure, sets content, maintains a coherent focus and signals a closure.  New vocabulary will be continually introduced.

Math: Students will solve problems, reasons and estimates throughout mathematics.  Emphasis will be placed on word problems and the use of money in everyday living.  For example, budgeting, eating out, leisure activities, purchasing groceries and personal supplies.

History: Students will demonstrate knowledge of operation of governments and how it pertains to citizens, their rights and liberties and how this affects them in everyday life.

Science: Students will assess and explain a human activity that influence and modifies our environment, such as pollution, population growth, diseases, etc.

Computer Skills/Computer Lab: Students will learn basic operations and concepts by identify parts of computer; Log on and off independently; Identify and use tool bar to change font, size and color; Use graphics program to create a picture; Navigate teacher-chosen web sites; Use age-appropriate software; Demonstrate opening, using and closing of program; Use the Internet to research; Demonstrate use of search engines; Save and retrieve files; Copy and paste; Demonstrate appropriate use of printer; and Show responsible use of technology and equipment.

Community Based Instruction: Students will become acquainted with services in the community for work related resources as well as leisure activities.  Students will participate in grocery shopping while maintaining a specific budget, order and purchase their own food from a menu, demonstrate manners and social behaviors in eating and leisure establishments.  Students will participate in swimming lessons provided by a certified trainer through the local YMCA.  Additional field trips and educational activities will also be provided for the students.

Physical Education: Students will develop and improve their quality of life through regular physical activity each day.  This will be accomplished by using a student-centered approach while teaching physical fitness and fundamental motor skills leading to individual, group games and sports including intramural and lifetime sports.

Art: Students will learn how to express themselves freely in a creative manner.  They will learn how to communicate through art, develop skills and establish a sense of pride in their craftsmanship.  They will make connections with real-life subjects, and develop critical and creative thinking skills through art.

Electives: General education courses in Horticulture, Animal Science, Aquaculture, etc.
