Course Description

To provide the Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced dancer with study, further training, knowledge and application in various dance styles with strong emphasis in terminology, proper alignment, anatomy, musicality, expression, aesthetic, dance history and technical proficiency.

 

The dance course is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop skills that can be used to create visual impressions. The learning of values and attitudes of oneself is also a very important part of the dance course. The nature of the course offers the cultivation of such behavior as self-discipline, creativity, working with others, leadership, fellowship, responsibility, self-pride, and appearance. During the course of the year, students of all levels of dance will also have the opportunity to participate in Victorian Christmas and a Spring Performance at TCCHS.

 

 

Classroom Procedures:

  • Students are required to arrive on time! If they are tardy for any reason, students will need a pass from a teacher.
  • All students will meet Ms. Gaston at the front bathrooms to dress out. Dress out clothes must be in compliance with the schools dress code.
  • Students are given 5 Minutes to dress out (at the beginning of class) and 5 Minutes to dress back in (at the end of class).

 

 

 

Acceptable Dance Class Attire (Examples):

Leggings, athletic capris, sweat pants, shorts (must be fingertip length.)

 

 

 

Dance Class Needs (for Performance/s):

  • Black leotard or undergarments
  • Black Leggings (cannot be see through)
  • Solid black ankle socks or jazz shoes

 

 

Class Schedule:

Monday: Ballet Barre

Tuesday: Ballet Center

Wednesday: Lyrical/Jazz

Thursday: Fitness

Friday: Choreography

 

 

Classroom Etiquette:

  • Always come prepared for class
  • Full class participation
  • No talking out of turn
  • No Food
  • No Phones
  • No entering and exiting of assigned area
  • No disruptions of class progression
  • Be respectful of others

 

Daily Routine

  • Students will Dress Out (5 minutes)
  • Bell Ringer and Attendance (5 Minutes)
  • Teacher Guided Warm Up (10 Minutes)
  • Ballet Barre (Monday) and Center Exercises (Tuesday – Friday)
  • Across the Floor Sequence (Tuesday – Friday)
  • Combinations
  • Dress In (5 Minutes)

 

 

Grading:

  • 30% Performance
  • 20% Quizzes/Test/Benchmark
  • 50% Daily Participation

 

Make up Work

  • Students are responsible to find out what was missed and make up work assigned during absences. This includes missed choreography!
  • The student may be given the option to make-up the assignment by completing the original assignment, participating in a dance/movement activity or writing a 1-2 page typed paper on activity (This option is given at the discretion of the teacher). Make-up grade(s) will be given based on content and quality of paper.

Classroom Management:

Students will be recognized for their best behavior as well as receive consequences for disruptive behavior.

1st Offense: Verbal Warning

2nd Offense: Contact with Parent

3rd Offense: Referral to an Administrator

 

Cell Phone Policy:

All cell phones/electronics will be collect by Ms. Gaston at the beginning of class and stored in a safe place until the end of class. If a student refuses to turn his/her cell phone at the beginning of class and is caught using the device during class, the phone will be confiscated. (Disciplinary action will be taken and after school detention.)
