DANCE TEAM CAPTIAN AUDITIONS

Dear TCCHS Dance Team Captain Candidate:

I am so excited that you are considering auditioning for this position. I want to make sure that you understand what it means to be a Dance Captain and what is expected of you. Please read through this information carefully and make sure that you are completely devoted and up to the task before continuing on this journey. Please go over this information with your parents as well to insure that they are willing and able to support you in this endeavor.

It is important to look at yourself and analyze the reason you want to become a Captain. You must want more than the title of Captain. You must desire to be a servant leader and be the team’s most devoted member. Keep these requirements in mind as you make your decision:

You will dedicate many additional hours to the team throughout the summer and the school year.
You must maintain exemplary grades.
You must be a role model to your team and peers.
Maintenance of excellent attendance is a must.
You must be able to critique and guide your peers with compassion and respect.
You should be an outstanding performer and strive to grow in your dance ability and technique.
You must support the director, whether you agree with her or not. I will turn to you for your opinions, but you must remember that final decisions are mine to make based on what I feel is best for the team.
You must be able to treat everyone fairly and equally, putting the needs of the team and what is right above yourself and friendships. You have to put differences aside.
Being a leader inside and outside of school and practice is non-negotiable. It takes much longer to build or repair a reputation than it does to destroy it.
The officer line and director will work as a cohesive team.
The following character traits are necessary:
Creative, Organized, Self- Motivated, Compassionate, Enthusiastic, Cooperative, Respect, Humility, Confidentiality, Confidence, Dedication, Dependability, Responsibility.

The following criteria must be met to try out for a Dance Captain position:

• The candidate must have completed one year as a TCCHS Dance Club member and be a sophomore, junior, or senior for the 2022-2023 year.

• The candidate must have not been academically ineligible during the current school year.

• Must have no In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension or Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct Violations during the current school year.

• Must not have been absent for more than 5% of the school days in the current school year.

• Candidate must turn in the Captain Application and Contract by Friday, April 21 at 3:30pm.

As you ponder the above information, please keep in mind these final thoughts: Not everyone trying out will make Captain, or you may not receive the position you desire. I expect you to handle this in a mature manner. I expect you to remain on the team; you are a valuable member and can serve in other areas. Strong leadership is the backbone of the team and I expect more from them than other team members. An extreme level of dedication is required for this position and continual sacrifice comes with the territory. You will be expected to take initiative and take control of situations when necessary. You must earn respect and should not consider yourself above anyone else on the team. As a dance captain, you are a leader and this is a service position that requires hard work. It is not a position of royalty. If you choose to continue on this journey, I am proud that you have chosen to set your goals high and serve your team! Dance Captain Solo Audition Requirements

Must be 3 minutes in length.
Music must be school appropriate
Must be the dancers own choreography
Dancers will perform their solo for the judges only
The solo can be in any style of dance

Important information to know per the TCCHS Dance Club Handbook:

DANCE CAPTAINS

1. The dance captain line will typically consist of a Captain and one or two Co-Captains depending on the size of the dance club. The director and judges will determine exact titles and numbers of captains through the tryout process to best meet the needs of the team.

2. The purpose of the Captains is to assist the director with team management, choreography, instruction and contribute a student’s perspective to decision-making. Captain’s serve as the liaison between the Director and team members.

3. Captains serve as role models for team members and remain honest and trustworthy. Captains should maintain a sense of responsibility for the team and be honored to serve as an officer.

4. Captains will audition for all performances.

5. The Captain is in charge of the team in the absence of the Director. Decisions made by the Captain will be upheld unless later determined by the Director or Administration.

6. In the absence of the Captain, the remaining Captains will take over those responsibilities.

8. The following criteria must be met to try out for an officer position:

The candidate must have completed the current year as a TCCHS Dance Club member.
The candidate must not have been on academic probation at any time during the current school year.
Must have no In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension or Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct Violations during the current school year.
Must not have been absent for more than 5% of the school days in the current school year.
Officers must be willing to attend meetings during gold club time. Few exceptions will be made for academic purposes but this must be discussed prior to the tryout process.
Candidate must turn in the Officer Application and Contract by Friday, April 22 at 3:30pm.

9. Officers must attend all Dazzler activities, camps, clinics, contests, parties, etc. held throughout the year.

10. If an officer becomes academically ineligible while in office, she will be removed from the officer line and remain a team member.

11. An officer with excessive absences, excused or unexcused may be removed from her position.

12. The director has the right to discipline officers for falling short of their duties and may remove them from this position at any time.

13. The duties of a dance officer include:

To support and uphold decisions made by the Director and realize the decisions are made in the best interest of the team.
To help the team cooperate with each other and the Director.
To reinforce rules by reporting violations of team rules to the Director in a timely manner.
To assume any and all duties as assigned by the director.
To critique and guide team members with compassion and respect.
To constantly strive to improve in performance and technique.
To support the director, whether they agree or not, and accept her decisions without explanation.
