MATHCOUNTS Students Win First Place

MATHCOUNTS Students Win First Place

On February 7, Thomas County Middle School students traveled to Darton College to participate in the MATHCOUNTS Region competition.  The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is the only competition program of its kind with live, in-person events.   At the local, state, and national level, students win hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes every year.  Thomas County Middle School students competed in an exciting, “bee-style” contest against other area middle schools.  With the highest overall score, Thomas County Middle School earned first place in the Darton College Region MATHCOUNTS Competition.

These students will advance to the 2015 Georgia MATHCOUNTS competition at Georgia Tech in March. The Georgia MATHCOUNTS competition is presented by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE). With a decline in students entering college to major in Engineering and/or Technology fields, the GSPE has become a strong advocate and host of the Georgia MATHCOUNTS to encourage students at the middle school level to strive for excellence in math and science.  The team is coached by Debbie Lasseter and Terry Dukes.
