Science Fair Region Winners Move on to State

Thomas County Schools

Thomas County Middle School students recently had the opportunity to compete at the Regional Science Fair competition held at ABAC.  Ten students from TCMS placed first in their respective categories and have advanced to the State Science Fair competition.

Qualifying students include D’atra Lomax, Turner Horne, Ella Coffee, Charlie Emmett, Nathan Jarrett, Gabby Lindquist, Jackson Nestale, Paige Parkerson, Spencer Webb, and Brady Whatley.  The overall winner of the Junior Division went to Spencer Webb. In addition, Kim Simmons earned the Teacher Award, awarded to the teacher of the Junior Division Winner.

Web’s project asked the question “How does image compression affect image quality?” He said, “I had this message on my phone that I didn’t have enough storage to take another photo and wanted to see if I could compress the images to keep that from happening, so that’s how I chose my topic.”

Web, like many other students, used the science fair to find a problem faced in everyday life and worked to find a solution to solve the problem.  Webb stated that he wanted to be able to use what he learned from his science fair research to solve a problem faced by many.

Students will compete in the State Science Fair in Athens, Georgia at the end of March. Other winners from TCMS include:

1st place and alternates to state: Cadence Curnalia and Jordan Coaker.

2nd place winners:  Emily Wilson, Dru Jones, Jennifer Martin, Payton West, Lydia Glass, Nathan Landing, Meghan Moncrief, Hayden Groom, and Jordyn Tillman.

3rd place winners:  Ethan Daniels, Lainey Woodfin, and Allie Moore.
