Students from Pam Lewis’ fifth grade Social Studies class at Thomas County Middle School recently learned about the extraordinary life of President Jimmy Carter. In honor of Presidents Day, and as an extension of learning about President Carter, Ms. Lewis afforded students the opportunity to participate in the 2021 Presidents’ Day Contest sponsored by the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.

Students were invited to submit an essay, poem, or piece of art on the Life and Legacy of President Jimmy Carter. Four divisions were created to separate grade bands; K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The judging panel consisted of three retired teachers, one Jimmy Carter historian, and two national park interpretive rangers who determined results from 357 entries.

Lewis was informed on Friday afternoon that two of her students placed in the top three. Mackenize Kirkley was the first place 5th-grade level winner for her essay, and Eliza Gonzalez placed third in the essay category. Kirkley stated that she was “surprised, but excited” to find out that she won. Gonzalez said that she had revised her paper, twice, before submitting, and was excited to place in the top three.

Pam Lewis, social studies teacher of both girls, expressed that she is so proud of these students for the effort put forth. They did research, stayed after school, and gave up their recess time, in order to complete their essays.”

The overall winners from each of the three categories will prepare a short video to be included in the virtual program, aired at 10:00 A.M. on Facebook/Jimmy Carter NPS on Monday, February 15, 2021, Presidents’ Day.
