MERIT Meets Model T!

On Wednesday, January 19, 2022,  fifth-grade MERIT students at Thomas County Middle School had the opportunity to see a 1925 Model T Ford, thanks to the owner, Bob Curry.  Bob Curry, his son, Chris Curry, and grandson, fifth-grade MERIT student, Kai Curry, drove the Model T to the school that morning for the classes to view. The students recently learned about specialization, assembly lines, and the impact that Henry Ford had on the economy and production in the 1920’s.

The Model T has been in the Curry family since 1974, with eight years following being used to restore the vehicle. The Curry’s presented many interesting facts, not only about Model T’s, but specifically about the one in their possession. Underneath the metal exterior of the vehicle, the frame is constructed of all wood. During the restoration, the wheels had to be reconstructed with the help from a circus due to the spokes being all wood, as well. The students learned that all Model T’s were painted black because it was an easy color to access during that time period and because it dried quickly.

There are no modern-day gas pedals in the vehicle, however the Model T has what are called “dog bones” with three pedals. The gas tank will hold only nine gallons of gas, and the vehicle will travel up to approximately 45 miles per hour. Henry Ford designed the first automobiles as a way for people to be able to fix them on their own, so Model T’s came with an owner’s manual to eliminate the need for a mechanic. Vehicles evolved to having push-to-start buttons because the crank to start was too dangerous, especially in the 20’s when women began to drive.

This was such an amazing learning opportunity for all of the students!
