Canned Food Drive Donations Make Math Meaningful

Canned Food Drive

Thomas County students in Lin McClune's kindergarten class at Hand In Hand Primary School made “10 frames” with the canned foods that had been donated for the school holiday food drive. Students use objects or shapes in sets of ten to develop number sense. It teaches students to subitize, the ability to identify the number of things in a set simply by quickly looking at them—not by counting them one by one. The practice of subitizing has its roots in psychology, but it is now taught in preschools and early grades in addition to traditional counting and is a precursor to addition. Ten frames provide kids with a visual of numbers and give children hands-on experiences working with numbers.
