Waxing and Waning Oreos = Science Fun!

MoonPhase

Thomas County second graders in Jessica Duncan’s exploratory science class at Garrison-Pilcher Elementary School learned about the phases of the moon during the “Patterns in Day and Night Unit” that part of the homeroom science curriculum.  Using Oreo cookies, students engaged in a hands-on educational activity that was not only fun but also tasty! Students used repetition by creating the moon phases with the icing on the cookie and then copied the contrasting shapes onto a graphic organizer. While the cookie is the fun part, the graphic organizer is a daily grade that the homeroom teachers may apply towards the students’ science grades. Duncan plans activities based on what the homeroom teachers are teaching in their 30 minute science lessons they teach 2 - 3 days a week. The students take formal assessments in their homeroom classes.  All first and second graders at Garrison-Pilcher participate in a rotation of “Specials” classes consisting of music, physical education, health, art, and science.
