GP Windsock Testing

Thomas County first graders in Laura Mathis’s class at Garrison-Pilcher Elementary School Mrs. Mathis’s have been learning about weather tools and created their own wind socks. They learned the term “wind sock” and how to use it to determine if the wind is blowing a lot, a little, or none at all. Students took their windsocks outside to test them out. The class determined that it was not a windy day but a cloudy day with a slight breeze. The budding scientists also learned about "artificial wind" caused by things such as a fan or running around.

“The students can build on this experience in the future by learning more about weather and wind and specifically learning how to accurately read a real-life windsock,” said Mathis. “The kids loved being able to take their learning outside and see their weather tool work in real life.”
