September 5: LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

September 6:  We read Chapters 6-7 and completed the "Life Schedule" chart.

September 7: Library Day, Chapter 6-7 constructed response

September 8: We took a look at a sample argumentative essay and labeled the different parts.  Then, we tried setting up our own essay using a topic given by Mrs. Keve.

September 9: Finish argumentative notes from yesterday.  Watch LearnZillion video "Identifying Relevant Evidence"

August 29- Review for parts of speech test. 

August 30- Parts of Speech test, writing assignment in writing folder.  

August 31- Read Chapter 3.  Mrs. Keve summarized Chapters 4 and 5.  We reviewing annotating text and started TCMS Scjpp; Reading Article 2.

September 1- Finish TCMS School Reading Article 2

September 2- School cancelled due to Hurricane Hermine.

August 22-  Scholastic Reading Inventory

August 23-  Argumentative Writing Prezi: There's a link to the prezi in Google Classroom and on my website.  

August 24-  Library Day, Put argumentative writing notes in INB on pages 16 and 17..

August 25-  We discussed the book project for first nine weeks. We will be completing book projects in class on September 19th. Students put "Parts of Speech Cheat Sheet" in INB on pages 18 and 19.  Parts of Speech test next Tuesday, August 30th.

August 26-  Students took the vocabulary quiz over vocabulary words from chapters 1-2 of The Giver.  Review parts of speech using games posted in Google Classroom.

August 15- Correct Brainpop quiz from Friday.  Students received mobymax.com logins and Lexile scores and entered them on page 12 of the INB.  We went over last week's homework.  

August 16- Put utopia/dystopia notes on p.13.  View prezi on dystopian literature.

August 17- Writng Assignment on Google Classroom: Compare/contrast utopia and dystopia

August 18- We read chapters 1 and 2 of The Giver. Students received vocabulary for chapters 1 and 2.  These were written on page 14 in the INB.  Test next Friday.

August 19- SRI Tutorial Video, Quickwrite #2 

          How does Jonas's private talk with his parents help him to           feel less apprehensive?  Use details from the text to                   support your answer.

August 1- Go over handbook and pass out homework.  

August 2- Name game

August 3- Set up interactive notebook (standards, envelope and table of contents).  Set up writing folder.  

August 4- Model annotating text using the article "What is plagiarism?" and glue Thinkmarks onto page 7 of INB.

August 5- Students finished annotating "What is plagiarism?" independently. 

August 8- Go over homework and pass out new homework sheet. We will view a powerpoint on plagiarism and take notes in INB. 

August 9- Pass out plagiarism pledge.  Glue Lois Lowry article on page 10 and summarize on page 11.  

August 10- Library Day and The Giver pre-reading quickwrite

August 11- Writing Screener

December 7: Finish Martin Luther King Jr/Gandhi packet.  Students were given an opportunity for extra credit.

November 30-December 4

November 30: Students need to submit their compare/contrast essay to turnitin.com.

December 1:  We read chapters 11-14 of While the World Watched and watched a video of JFK's speech on human rights.  

December 2: Today is library day.  We started an argumentative quickwrite.  

December 3:  I gave students a few minutes to work on their argumentative quickwrite from yesterday.  If not finished in class, it needed to be finished for homework.

We read chapters 15 and 16 and answered questions for both chapters. 

December 4:  We read an article about Martin Luther King  Jr. and completed an assignment to go along with that article.

We started Daily Language Review today.  This will be done at the start of each class period.  We reviewed the different parts and discussed the answers.

Plagiarism Quiz Redo-  Graded quizzes were returned to the students. Students can correct their quizzes and turn them back in for a higher grade.

August 10:

We viewed a Brain Pop on plagiarism and took a quiz over the video. 

We answered today's EQ in our INB and paraphrased a short biography on Lois Lowry.  See the first nine weeks folder for more information and handouts.

August 11:

Fall Writing Screener

August 12:

Today we looked at the definition and characteristics of dystopian and utopian societies. 

August 13:

Students compared and contrasted the two types of societies using a Venn diagram.

August 14:

Students turned in the essays we worked on in class Thursday.

The Giver Vocabulary Chapter 1-2.  Students wrote the words and definitions on page 18 of their INB.  The words are also located on my website.

August 3:

Rules and procedures

Writing topic- Should summer break be just a little bit longer or should we add extra days to the school year? Write an essay to argue your side.

August 4:

Students received instructions to view their grades in Infinite Campus.

We made bookmarks for our interactive notebooks. 

We finished our argumentative essays from yesterday and students turned them in to me.

August 5:

Library Day

We discussed independent reading projects.  The first project is due September 22.  Each student set a personal goal for how many pages they need to read in his or her novel in order to finish in time to complete book project.  See the "Interactive Reading Project" folder on my website for more information.

August 6:

Today we set up our interactive notebooks.

March 16: NO SCHOOL TODAY!!

Vocabulary Lesson 13

Benchmark:  Students reviewed the questions they missed on the benchmark and had a chance to meet with Mrs. Keve one-on-one to get help with any questions they didn't understand.

March 18:

Vocabulary Lesson 13

Benchmark:  We discussed the constructed response questions.  We learned R.A.C.E. to help us remember the parts of a constructed response. After instruction students are redoing their responses to the constructed response questions.

March 19:

Vocabulary Lesson 13

Benchmark:  Students finished rewriting the constructed response questions from the benchmark. They traded papers with a neighbor and scored each other's papers using the same rubric that was used to score their original responses.

March 9 and 10:

Chapter 8 Activities;  Students read Chapter 8 of Secrets of Alcatraz.  They made a travel brochure for Alcatraz and they wrote a ghost story.

March 11-13:

Students were given an assignment to do for extra credit.

Students were also given their missing assignments, and they were given time to ask me for help.

Day NINE Sharpening the Saw:  Spend ten minutes writing as many complex sentences as you can.  Hint: Use since, although or when to start your sentences.  All quickwrites Day 1-Day 9 were collected for a grade. 

Independent/Dependent Clauses:  We took a quiz over independent and dependent clauses.

Action Magazine Assignment: This is the last chance you will have to work on this assignment in class.  If you aren't finish, you will need to come to my room during homeroom or bus loads to finish.

January 20:

Text Structure Test

January 21:

Vocabulary Week 10:

We completed the assignments for Monday-Wednesday.

Text Structure Test:

Students had an opportunity to redo the questions they missed on the test yesterday.  They earned three points for each correct question.

January 22:

Vocabulary Week 10:

We completed the assignments for Thursday.  I'm checking the vocabulary lesson tomorrow for a grade.

Action Magazine Assignment:

We started an assignment using the November 14, 2014 edition of Action magazine.  We will finish the assignment Friday, the 23rd.

Teacher/Students Conferences:  Today and tomorrow I am conferencing with students who are currently failing Language Arts for the year.

January 12-16

January 12-13:

Paragraph editing 9:  We have a quiz over this (along with Voc. Lesson 9) Friday, January 16th.  Your child should have notes in his or her notebook.

Text Structure Prezi:  We continued to discuss text structure.  Monday we started a prezi that we will finish on Tuesday.  The prezi is located on my website in the Third Nine Weeks folder.

Tuesday we will go to the library.  Independent Reading Projects are due March 2nd.  You can find a list of projects as well as a rubric on my website in the Independent Reading Project folder.

January 14:

Paragraph editing 9: We have a quiz over this (along with Voc. Lesson 9) Friday, January 16th. Your child should have notes in his or her notebook.

Today student will scan QR codes to gather information about text structure. The information will be organized into categories according to the structure is described.  If you child is absent, there is a handout on my website (Third Nine Weeks, Text Structure folder) so that your child can complete the activity at home.

Chapter One Vocabulary- When students finish the QR code assignment, they will start chapter one vocabulary.  They will finish the handout for homework.  The handout is included on my website in the chapter one folder under third nine weeks.

January 15:

We watched a video tour of Alcatraz in preparation for our next novel.

January 6-7:

Argumentative Essay: Argue why we should or should not have a longer Christmas break.

Homework: Wednesday night, finish essay for homework.

January 8:

Vocabulary Lesson 9: Students should have notes in their notebook. Quiz January 16th

Today students had a chance to redo their Benchmark Exam from 2nd Nine weeks.

January 9:

Today we discussed five different types of text structure.  We wrote five quickwrites- one for each structure.  We also took notes.  The quickwrites as well as the notes are posted on my website in the Third Nine Weeks folder.
