Students at a local high school are aiding the fight to defeat cancer one cap at a time.

Thomas County Central High School participated in “Caps for CURE” Friday, Sept. 22. For a $1 donation (anyone could give more), students and faculty were allowed to wear caps inside the school throughout the day.

The caps fundraiser is sponsored by CURE Childhood Cancer, a Georgia-based nonprofit organization that raises funds for research targeting the various cancers that affect children. For more information, visit the website curechildhoodcancer.org.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. TCCHS has had students who battled cancer, and many students and faculty may know someone who has been affected by the disease.

“I participated...to help try to decrease the amount of kids that die from cancer,” student Desiree Hough said.

Senior Eli Stephens said he wore his cap because it was cool and supported a great cause at the same time.

Overall, TCCHS raised $600.10. McLeod thanks everyone who participated.

“I was most impressed with the participation of our students,” he said. “Raising more than $600 exceeded our expectations and was an improvement from last year. Students being allowed to wear their favorite cap made the event more personal for each student and hopefully made the event more meaningful. The important thing is that our efforts will make a difference toward future research for this terrible disease that attacks our children.”
