Thomas County Central High School’s fifth annual Job Shadowing Day is quickly approaching. Organizers are seeking local businesses to collaborate with them to allow students to observe various career environments. 

Commonly held around Groundhog Day, Job Shadowing Day is a nationally recognized initiative dedicated to educating high school students on working life after graduation. Students spend the day observing fields such as healthcare, automotive and welding. This allows participants to see how skills acquired in high school can make transferring to a job easier.

“By giving kids this opportunity, it really helps them determine what field they want to pursue after high school,” TCCHS Work-Based Learning Coordinator Brandi Miranda said. 

After last year’s event, partakers had many positive comments. Past participant Destiny Cole recommended the experience to students.

“...You will learn a lot and have an awesome time,” she said. 

Student Mya Cooney encouraged her peers to participate because she benefited from the experience. She shadowed at New Hire Solutions and observed how its staff helps others find careers that suit them.

“My job shadowing experience gave me a chance to see how impactful I can be in a person’s life without being their psychiatrist,” she said. 

The year’s shadow day is Feb. 4, 2020. The deadline for businesses to register as a host site is Jan. 17. Students have until Jan. 24 to sign up as a participant.
