Description:

Community Service is all about serving without expecting anything in return. When we serve our community, we are investing in something that is bigger than ourselves, which ends up being most rewarding.  Serving ones community can result in earning the highly sought after bronze, silver and gold Community Service Awards at the annual Senior Honors program.  Community service becomes Service Learning when the activity engaged in connects meaningful service experiences with academic learning, person growth, and civic responsibility. While our school still tracks community service hours, and awards the coveted community service medal for graduating seniors, we strive to add a realistic and credible learning component to community service.

Service learning credit is given for active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that:

  1. Meet community and/or school needs;
  2. Are coordinated in collaboration with the school and the community;
  3. May be integrated into the curriculum;
  4. Provide structured time for a student to reflect, talk and write bout what he/she learns during service activities Provide students with skills and knowledge in real life situations in their own communities;
  5. Enhance what is taught in the school by extending student learning beyond the classroom and;
  6. Help foster the development of a sense of caring for others
