Articulation/Speech Sound Practice

There are many fun and easy ways to incorporate articulation practice into your daily routines.  I encourage you to choose one of the ideas below and spend 10-15 minutes 2-3 days per week to practice your speech sounds.  If you do not remember the speech sound you are working on feel free to email me or look at your copy of your IEP. I would love to hear you practice!  I would love to hear how you are practicing your speech sounds at home so email me at lhamm@tcjackets.net and we can set up a time to talk on the phone or over the computer. Have fun!

Scavenger Hunt-Search your house, yard, fridge, pantry, or toy box for things that have your sound.  Don’t forget a piece of paper and pencil so you can write them down. Can you find 10 things with your sound?  20 things with your sound? Once you have made a list, read them to your parents or siblings and make sure to try to say your sound correctly!  To make this harder, make up a sentence with each word.

Books -While you are at home I hope you are reading!  Next time you read a book I challenge you to read it again and pay special attention to your speech sound.  If your mom and dad will let you, use a pencil to underline your speech sound to remind you to say it correctly while you are reading.  You can record yourself and listen to your speech sounds afterwards.

This can also be done with reading passages in your take home packets from your teacher.  Feel free to use your favorite color marker or crayon to highlight your speech sound in the packet.

Make your own story-  Pick 5 or more words from your word list and make a story using all of the words.  It’s ok if it’s a silly story!

Draw a picture:  Pick 5 words from your word list and create a picture that includes all of the words that you chose.

Describing: Pick something around your house or yard.  Get your parent or sibling and give them 3 clues about what you picked, but don’t tell them what it is!  Make sure you use your speech sounds correctly while you are giving them clues.

Grocery List:  Help Mom, Dad, Grandma, or whoever you live with make a grocery list.  Is there anything on the list that has your speech sound? If so, say that word 5-10 times.

Word/Sentence Practice: If you are practicing your sound in words pick 10 words and say them 3-5 times each.  If you are doing sentences, pick 20 words. Feel free to record yourself and you can be the speech teacher.  Did they sound good or do you need to try again?
