Regular Past Tense Verbs

To make a verb past tense or to show that it has already happened add “ed” to the end of the word.  “Play” becomes “played”. Today I play, yesterday I played.  

 

Change the verb to past tense by adding “ed” to show that it already happened.

 

Walk

Today I walk.

Yesterday I __________.

Watch

I watch TV.

Last night I ____________ TV..

Clean

I clean my room.

Yesterday I _________ my room.

Open

I open my door.

Earlier this morning I ____________ my door.

Jump

I like to jump on the trampoline.

Last week I ____________ on the trampoline.

Talk

Today I talk on the phone.

Last night I ______________ on the phone.

Type

I type on the computer.

Yesterday I ____________ on the computer.

Paint

I paint a picture.

Last month I _____________ a picture.

Plant

I plant a flower.

Last Saturday I _____________ a fower.

Close

I close my door.

Last night I ______________ my door.


 

Irregular Past Tense Verbs

Sometimes the verbs do not follow the rules and we cannot add “ed” to change it to past tense.  We call these irregular verbs because they change in different ways to show past tense.


 

Run

Today I run.

Yesterday I RAN

Go

I want to go to school.

I WENT to school in March.

Eat

I eat breakfast in the morning.

This morning I ATE breakfast.

Swim

I swim everyday.

Yesterday I SWAM.

Sit

I sit on the sofa.

Last night I SAT on the sofa.

Sleep

I like to sleep late.

I SLEPT late this morning.

Get

I will get new shoes.

Yesterday I GOT new shoes.

Buy

I will buy some gum.

Yesterday I BOUGHT some gum.

Catch

I like to catch the ball.

I CAUGHT the ball.

Throw

I can throw far.

I THREW the ball far.
